The next club meeting will be on Monday, Oct 12 at 5:30 p.m. in 1313 Coover, (the TLA). We will be using the lab benches in there. Stop by to work on your projects or just to chit chat. I think we can be as noisy as we want in the TLA.

Important Update! There is a change of venue for the club meetings. We are moving from 2011 Coover to the TLA (1313 Coover). There are 12 fully equipped lab benches on the west side of the room (to the right as you enter). The benches are reserved for our use on Mondays at 5:30. We will be able to do all of our circuit work here.

The reason for the change is that there is a Signals and Systems lab scheduled right on top of our traditional meeting time. At the beginning of the semester, I totally neglected to make certain that the lab room was available for us. Perhaps I can be excused a little bit for not checking. In all the years that I taught classes that used the 2011 and 2014 lab rooms — including since I retired — I can recall only one time that any lab was scheduled in either 2011 or 2014 on a Monday. That's the reason that we originally chose to have club activities on Monday — there was no chance for conflicts with classes. I naively assumed that the present would be identical to the past.

Here's a bit of speculation as to why there are labs on Mondays this semester. It appears that there are now 5 lab sections for EE2240. In the past, there were usually only two or three. Since the rest of the week is pretty well loaded with labs, the extra sections had to go on Monday. Why the sudden increase? EE2240 is the first class that is required for EEs but not for CprEs. Apparently there is a big uptick in EE majors. Why is that? Probably because students are steering away from computer/software majors. Of course, we all know the reason for that: OpenAI and Anthropic are wreaking havoc on the software industry with their Codex and Claude LLMs. There is tremendous uncertainty in the software world now. It makes sense that students might steer away from software and towards another, "safer" technical field like EE, which hasn't (yet!) been completely trampled by AI.

So, it might be argued that we had to move our club space because of AI. Thanks, Sam Altman.

My speculation above is probably obvious to everyone. Or maybe I'm completely bogus. We can argue about it on Discord, if you'd like. Yes, I'm on the Audio/Arduino Discord now. I'll try to remember to check the discussion periodically. if you have questions about club projects — or anything else — send them my way.

Audio/Arduino meeting today at 5:30 pm in 2011 Coover. At the meeting you can:

• Pick up and pay for any projects you've requested.
• Work on building circuits. (Including learning how to solder.)
• Consult and ask questions about any projects, including your own.
• Sign up for more projects you might like to try.

Reminder: Our next Audio/Arduino meeting is on Sep 21 at 5:30 p.m. in 3042 Coover. At the meeting we will:

• Briefly review how the clubs work.
• Have a very high-level overview of embedded systems and Arduino.
• Demonstrate a few completed projects.
• Sign up for projects. (Project work begins next week.)

The Audio and Arduino Clubs have been on hiatus for a while, but it's time spin back up for the Fall semester.

Our first meeting will be on Monday, Sep 14 at 5:30 p.m. in 3043 Coover Hall. We will:

• discuss how the clubs work,
• have a brief overview of some of the basics of audio systems, and
• describe a few of the audio projects that will be available to build this fall.

The second meeting will be on Sep 21 at 5:30, also in 3043 Coover Hall. At that meeting, we will a present a very high-level view of embedded systems and describe some of the Arduino-based projects that will be available as part of Arduino Club.

Following the first two meetings, we will shift into project mode. All subsequent meetings will be in the lab in 2011 Coover. The focus of all remaining meetings will be on building electronics. (Caveat: As the need arises, there may be some discussion sessions or demonstrations that will be held in other locations.)

Anyone interested in building electronics hardware, audio technology, or embedded systems is welcome to attend any of the meetings. There are no prerequisites or requirements for participating in the clubs. If you have any questions about the clubs, contact G. Tuttle or the IEEE vice-president, Andrew Beack, who arranges club affairs for IEEE.
